People Come First

  • Dr. Al Stenger

Dr. Stenger graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in Chemistry and earned his dental degree from Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry.

After completing dental school, Dr. Stenger returned to Charlottesville to complete a two-year general practice residency at the University of Virginia Hospitals.  During his residency, Dr. Stenger had the opportunity to work with medically compromised individuals who had very complex situations that didn’t necessarily conform to the usual and customary. While he has always had great respect and compassion for individual needs, this experience served to further his patient philosophy that each patient is unique and deserves to be treated as such.

“We believe that taking time to listen to and understand each patient’s needs is critical to providing individualized care. Each of our doctors is committed to making this a priority,” says Dr. Stenger.

Dr. Stenger has been honored with Richmond Magazine’s “Best Bedside Manner” award as well as recognized as a “Top Dentist” for multiple years.

Dr. Stenger believes that the best way to make your community better is to become engaged. For over two decades, he enjoyed teaching dental students at the VCU School of Dentistry.  He was recognized with the VCU “Excellence in Dental Education Award” for his ongoing commitment to dental education. Dr. Stenger also served on the Cross Over Ministry Board of Directors, The Virginia Board for People with Disabilities, and the Chesterfield County Special Education Advisory Committee for numerous years.  Leadership roles included serving as a past president of Richmond Dental Society and later on their Board of Directors. Earlier in his dental career, Dr. Stenger served in the House of Delegates representing the Virginia Dental Association, and as committee chair for the Special Needs Committee and the Virginia Dental Health Foundation.  He has also enjoyed volunteering in the VDA Missions of Mercy outreach projects in Wise County, the Eastern Shore, Grundy, and Danville.

Dr. Stenger and his wife Krista have three children Nick, Abby (and son-in-law Bryan), and Jon. In 2022, they welcomed their first grandchild – baby Eli.
